Memorizing Colossians – December Encouragement

Where has the year gone? It doesn’t seem that long ago that the first post in this series went up. As we finish up the series on memorizing Colossians I would like to leave you with some favorite tips from the year that I have benefited most from:

Scripture Typer has been the tool I have used most in working on my verses. I use it for not just Colossians but our church memory verses and personal verses to memorize. You can categorize them and it goes over the review automatically with you.

Revive Our Hearts had a radio program with Nancy Epperson called The Joy of Memorizing the Word.  The link takes you to the first of four programs in the series and they are free to read or listen to online.

A Call to Memorize Scripture by Susan Heck has been a great, short and very helpful resource.

Take some time to visit all the Colossians posts in this series. There are some great tips that will be a help and encouragement to you in being consistent and diligent to “hiding God’s Word in your heart”.

This is a must watch video called – Why Memorize Scripture from John Piper.  (If you are reading this in your email you will have to click through to the blog here to see the video.)

John Piper offers a list of reasons why we should memorize Scripture in his article entitled, Why Memorize Scripture. They are:

1. Conformity to Christ – Bible memorization has the effect of making our gaze on Jesus steadier and clearer.

2. Daily Triumph over Sin – As sin lures the body into sinful action, we call to mind a Christ-revealing word of Scripture and slay the temptation with the superior worth and beauty of Christ over what sin offers.

3. Daily Triumph over Satan – When Jesus was tempted by Satan in the wilderness he recited Scripture from memory and put Satan to flight.

4. Comfort and Counsel for People You Love – When the heart full of God’s love can draw on the mind full of God’s word, timely blessings flow from the mouth.

5. Communicating the Gospel to Unbelievers – Actual verses of the Bible have their own penetrating power. And when they come from our heart, as well as from the Book, the witness is given that they are precious enough to learn.

6. Communion with God in the Enjoyment of His Person and Ways – The way we commune with (that is, fellowship with) God is by meditating on his attributes and expressing to him our thanks and admiration and love, and seeking his help to live a life that reflects the value of these attributes.
