My Reading List for 2014

Here is my hopeful list of books to read in 2014 (affiliate links).  I’m setting the physical books on a shelf so they’re in one spot.  The ones that are on my Kindle usually end up getting read from my iPad and I love using a timer for my reading.  It helps me to stay focused and set aside time everyday to read something edifying instead of puttering moments away on various articles or that dreaded time waster – Facebook!  (I love Facebook and can get caught up on there more than I would like – a post to come on that one soon!)

1.  Strange Fire by John MacArthur

3.  Found In Him: The Joy of the Incarnation and Our Union with Christ by Elyse Fitzpatrick (love her books, if you haven’t read any yet I highly recommend to start with Because He Loves Me)
4.  Hudson Taylor’s Spiritual Secret by Dr. & Mrs. Howard Taylor
6.  The Gospel Focus of Charles Spurgeon by Steven J. Lawson
7.  Pursue the Intentional Life by Jean Fleming (A Mother’s Heart is a favorite of mine too!)
8.  Grain Brain by David Perlmutter M.D.
9.  Humble Orthodoxy by Joshua Harris
10.  Glimpses of Grace by Gloria Furman
13.  The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey
I’m currently reading Housewife Theologian by Aimee Y. Bird. I am hoping to get several audiobooks in this year and to do that I’m utilizing some free downloads from Christian Audio.  The month of January they have the ESV Bible on Audio Book to download for free.
Several of my top picks from last years reading are:
Slave by John MacArthur
Resisting Gossip by Matthew C. Mitchell (See my post on How to Resist Gossip)
By His Wounds You Are Healed by Wendy Alsup – (Still reading this one as our church elders are preaching through the book of Ephesians right now)
Jesus on Every Page by David Murray
Accidental Pharisees by Larry Osborne
I’m working through The Excellent Wife with some ladies from church and will re-read this year Shopping for Time  (this book helps me to plan my spiritual priorities every year and Feminine Appeal.
I’ve started the Bible in 90 Days reading plan and after I finish it I would like to move on to Professor Horner’s Bible Reading Plan.  Praying I stay focused and diligent in my daily intake of God’s Word.  Tabletalk Magazine is part of my daily reading plan to help me get a bit deeper into the Word.  I’ve also been utilizing Charles Hodges’ commentary on Proverbs in the mornings.
Prayer is a spiritual discipline that I am focusing on this year.  I have on my list to read Alone with God by John MacArthur and Praying Backwards by Bryan Chappel.  I’m still using my books to prayer over my husband, children and grandchildren by Andrew Case – Prayers of an Excellent Wife and Setting Their Hope in God (they’re still only $.99 on Kindle!).  A Praying Life by Paul Miller was an influential book in my life last year on the power of prayer.  The best way to work on prayer is to just pray though!
I hope that I can get through one or two books a month.  I’ll pick up a few eBooks along the way from fellow bloggers who I learn much from too.  I’ve been using a timer and trying to schedule regular time to read everyday (usually before bed).  I get a lot of reading done when I’m traveling with my husband.  (I sit in the car while he makes sales calls – lots of reading time).  I plan on keep a book by my nightstand, reading chair in the family room, on my kitchen desk, and in the car.  My Kindle app on my phone makes it handy to read whenever I find myself waiting somewhere unexpectedly.
What are some of your picks for this year to read?  What are favorites that have impacted you from years past?  Do you set reading goals?
